Maize supply in Tamil Nadu could be influenced by the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of below-normal North-East monsoon rainfall over the southern peninsular region

Maize prices in Tamil Nadu are likely to hover around ₹2,700 a quintal at the farm gate during the harvest season, according to a pre-harvest price forecast by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

The university’s Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC), under the Department of Agricultural Economics, Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS), arrived at the forecast after analysing maize prices in the Udumalpet market over the past 15 years and conducting a market survey.

However, subsequent price movements will depend on arrivals from Bihar, the cell said, advising farmers to make appropriate selling decisions based on market conditions.

Rainfall deficit

Maize supply in Tamil Nadu could be influenced by the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of below-normal North-East monsoon rainfall over the southern peninsular region. A rainfall deficit could affect crop availability and prices in the State.

Tamil Nadu produces about 33 lakh tonnes of maize from 5.4 lakh hectares. Salem, Namakkal, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Villupuram and Tiruppur are among the major maize-producing districts.

Besides domestic production, the State depends on supplies from other maize-producing States, including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Arrivals from these States, particularly Bihar, are expected to play a key role in determining price movements.

Feed, fuel sectors

Maize has gained importance beyond food consumption, with demand rising from the animal feed, fuel blending and starch processing industries.

India produced 550.93 lakh tonnes of maize from 144.08 lakh hectares in 2025-26, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s third advance estimates. Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh are among the major producing States.

Declining monsoon rainfall has affected kharif acreage, while the United States Department of Agriculture has also flagged the impact of below-normal rainfall on India’s maize yields and area.

With weather conditions and inter-State arrivals likely to influence local supply, farmers may need to assess prevailing market prices and arrival trends before deciding when to sell their produce.
